DISCIPLES OF CHRIST IN COMMUNITY 

The spring 2010 session of Disciples of Christ in Community at
Washington National Cathedral starts Jan. 12 and runs for 14 weeks. Each
session is two hours long, 7-9 p.m. One Saturday session will be held on
Feb. 7, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost is $100. Register at

Christianity. Each session consists of a presentation followed by a

COUPLEHOOD AS A SPIRITUAL PATH

Couplehood as a Spiritual Path: The Imago Journey for Couples Inviting
the Healing Spirit of God to Emerge in Your Relationships, is set for
six Tuesday nights, 7 to 9 p.m. from Nov. 3 to Dec. 8 at Washington
National Cathedral. This educational course for couples who want to
realize their relationship potential was developed by Harville Hendrix
and Helen LaKelly Hunt based on Imago principles described in their
bestselling book, "Getting the Love You Want." Cost: $40 per couple for

HELP THE HOMELESS WALKATHON

Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington invites members of the diocese
to walk under the Samaritan Ministry banner at the Nov. 21 Help the
Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

EASTER PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND 

Join the Rev. Canon John Peterson on a pilgrimage to experience the
ancient rites and processions of Holy Week in Jerusalem from March
25-April 6. This is a rare opportunity to participate in Western and
Orthodox Easter observances since the date for both calendars coincide
in 2010. Experience the culture and history of the region through
lectures and discussions, local cuisine, contemplative walks in sacred
spaces, worship services, evening events and the hospitality of the many

SAVE THE DATE - SIMULCAST SERVICE WITH BETHLEHEM

The third annual Joint Simulcast Worship Service with the People of
Bethlehem is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 19 in Washington National Cathedral's
Bethlehem Chapel. In Washington, the service will be led by Bishop John
Bryson Chane and Bishop Richard Graham of the Metropolitan Washington,
D.C. Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Dean Samuel T.
Lloyd and the Rev. Canon Steve Huber, the cathedral's vicar. In
Bethlehem Dr. Mitri Raheb, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas
Church in Bethlehem, Bishop Munib Younan of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Jordan and the Holy Land and Bishop Suheil Dawani of the
Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem will preside. The service is sponsored by
the Ad Hoc Committee for Bethlehem, Sharing Jerusalem and Washington
Interfaith Alliance for Middle East Peace. 

 

TEA TIME AT ASCENSION, SILVER SPRING

Ascension, Silver Spring (633 Sligo Avenue) will host a tea party in its
Parish Hall from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 8. Tea with  tea sandwiches,
fresh-baked scones and homemade cakes, sweetbreads and cookies served on
fine china, plus music provided by Karen Ashbrook (hammered dulcimer,
flute), Paul Oorts (harpguitar, accordion) and Maybelle Kagy (piano).

Holly Bass and musical friends perform this work of jazz and poetry at

HEALING SERVICE AT ST. DAVID'S, D.C.

St. David's, D.C., will hold a special service of Holy Eucharist with
the laying on of hands for healing at 5 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 18).  This
service is open to all in the community. St. David's is located at 5150

DIOCESAN HUNGER WALKS 

The diocesan Hunger Fund Committee invites you to participate in either
of two concurrent Hunger Walks on Sunday (Oct. 18) to raise money for
the Hunger Fund. The fund provides grants to organizations throughout
the diocese that provide food to those in need. Both walks begin at 1:30
p.m., and will take place at:

ST. PAUL'S CHOIR OF MEN AND BOYS TO HOST OPEN HOUSE

St. Paul's, K Street will host an Open House on Sunday (Oct. 18) for

5TH ANNUAL UNITY WALK

The 5th annual interfaith Unity Walk is set for 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday
(Oct. 18). The walk will begin with opening remarks at the Washington
Hebrew Congregation. Attendees will visit numerous houses of worship
along Embassy Row for hospitality, remarks will be given at the Islamic
Center of Washington and the event will conclude with a singing
procession to the Gandhi Memorial. The walk aims to build bridges of
respect among different faiths as a model for the world to emulate. This
year's theme is "Celebrating Our Faiths, Uniting to Serve." For further

SAINT PAUL'S COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER

A Saint Paul's College Scholarship Fundraiser and announcement of the
Charles N. and Hilda H. M. Mason endowment fund  is set for 7 p.m. to

30TH ANNUAL INTERFAITH CONCERT

The InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington will hold its 30th
Annual InterFaith Concert from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the

CHILDREN-TO-CHILDREN ADVENT APPEAL

The 4th Annual Bishop's Children-to-Children Advent Appeal will support
mothers and children working with Mother Orma and the Purple Industries
sewing ministries in Swaziland. The mothers in the program have knitted
stuffed teddy bears, which are available for $25 each.  Christmas orders
are due by Dec. 14: Fax orders to 202/364-6605 for delivery to parishes
before Dec. 20. If you wish to make a donation of $25 but choose not to
receive a bear, the bear will be given to a child in this diocese who is
affected by HIV/AIDS. The Southern Africa Partnership Committee has
prepared a storybook and activities to help Sunday School directors
share the lives of the children in Swaziland with the children in your

THE POWER OF NONVIOLENCE

The Episcopal Peace Fellowship will hold a workshop exploring personal
and social tools for nonviolent conflict resolution, The Power of
Nonviolence, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 at St. Alban's, D.C. The
interfaith workshop costs $10. Please bring your own lunch. Facilitators
will present the legacy of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Desmond
Tutu, in light of the personal and international problems facing us
today.  There will be film clips from PBS' "A Force More Powerful" about

2010 COMPENSATION GUIDES AND HEALTH PLAN RATES

The 2010 Compensation Guidelines for active clergy and lay employees
will remain at 2009 levels with special consideration for enhanced
compensation given to those whose compensation falls below these
guidelines. Monthly health premiums in 2010 will be $643 individual,
$1,187 employee plus one, $1,769 family. Additional information is

APPLY NOW FOR THE SUMMER COLLEGIUM

Apply now for the Summer Collegium, a project in support of small
congregations at Virginia Theological Seminary. Clergy (and their
spouses or partners) are invited to spend nine days at VTS for
encouragement, education, rest and renewal. All expenses are paid by a
grant from the Lilly Endowment. The Collegium is set for June 23 - July

HUMAN INTERACTION LAB TRAINING

Human Interaction Lab training, set for Feb.12-15 at St. Alban's, D.C.,
is an opportunity to learn more about yourself, how your behavior
impacts others, and how you can function more effectively in a group and
interpersonal situations. The competencies developed are those
associated with what has been called emotional intelligence.
Participants will learn about their own patterns of behavior as they

ALL YOUTH CATHEDRAL LOCK-IN 

The All Youth Cathedral lock-In is set for Nov 13. The theme is
"Episco...what? EpiscoLOVE!" Register online by Oct. 30 at

FIVE AUTUMN EVENINGS OF PRAYER

For five autumn evenings, you are invited to gather at Epiphany, D.C.,
to pray contemplatively with the images and words of autumn, to become
more aware of God's presence in the season and our response to God.
Attend any or all of the sessions, which are set for 6 to 7 p.m.

ADVENT SILENT RETREAT

The Diocesan Retreat Committee will hold an Advent Silent Retreat on
Dec. 4- 6 at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, Marriottsville. Retreat
director will be the Very Rev. Ian Markham, dean of the Virginia
Theological Seminary. The theme will be "Faith, Forgiveness and Peace:
Bringing Human Complexity to God." The retreat will include prayer,
private reflection and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. There will
be opportunities for consultation or confession with Markham. The fee is

DATE CHANGE! PILGRIMAGE TO SOUTH AFRICA

Join the Rev. Mpho Tutu and the Rev. Katherine Stiles for a two-week
retreat to South Africa. The pilgrimage is set for Jan 16-29, 2010;
registration deadline is Oct. 15. Cost is $5,500 based on double
occupancy, and includes round-trip airfare from Dulles, accommodations

HONDURAS TRIP RESCHEDULED

The diocesan mission trip to Honduras has been rescheduled for Jan.
10-20, 2010. The itinerary remains the same: Jan 10-15 in Copan in
intensive one-on-one Spanish study, with home stays with local families;
Jan. 16-20 in rural villages with Episcopal Church communities. Costs
will be about $1,000 including language study and airfare. Contact Tom

NEW GRANT AVAILABLE TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN IN NEED

The Pitts Emergency Grant, created by the Saint Anna's Home of the
Diocese of Washington, is a one-time award of up to $1,500 designed to
offer emergency assistance to women of at least 70 years old of African
descent who are members of the Diocese of Washington when there is a
critical, unexpected event which requires an immediate response. Funds
will be paid directly to an entity, not an individual. The request must
come from or be endorsed by a clergy member in the diocese. The process
is confidential, and requests can be submitted at any time to: Pitts
Emergency Grant of Saint Anna's Home, Episcopal Diocese of Washington,
Episcopal Church House, Mt. Saint Alban, Washington, D.C. 20016. For
