The Regional Assembly for Regions 5 & 6 is set for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. Nov. 21 at Queen Anne School, Upper Marlboro. Clergy, wardens,
convention delegates and other members of vestries should plan to
attend. The guest speaker, the Rev. Bob Gallagher, will make a
presentation and lead discussion on issues concerning congregational
growth. Gallagher is the founder of the Church Development Institute,
which conducts intensive training programs on congregational leadership

EVENSONG IN RECOGNITION OF ECW, UTO AND ALL WOMEN'S SERVICE

An Evensong in recognition of Episcopal Church Women, United Thank

2009 CHILDREN TO CHILDREN ADVENT APPEAL

Materials have been mailed to each parish (Attn: Director of Sunday
School/Christian Education) and also can be found at www.edow.org/sapc
This year's appeal, through the sale of hand knitted stuffed teddy
bears, provides income to working mothers and grandmothers for their
children and families in Swaziland. Any Christmas requests must be
received by Dec. 14. Parishes are asked to send in group orders on the
parish order form included in the mailing or obtainable from the Web
site. Orders will be available, however, through January or as supplies
last. Materials include a storybook and an activities guide to use in

WASHINGTON EPISCOPAL SCHOOL - FALL OPEN HOUSE

Parents of prospective Washington Episcopal School students are invited
to visit the school at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 for an Open House. There will be a
panel presentation and question-and-answer period, followed by a tour of
the school. Washington Episcopal School serves students from age 3
through grade eight. Open Houses continue through the fall and winter,
including Dec. 6 (1-3 p.m.) and Jan. 5 (9 a.m.). For more information,

FABULOUS 50-PLUS CELEBRATION

St. Paul's, Piney, in conjunction with Region 6 congregations, is
hosting a Fabulous 50-Plus Celebration with Eucharist, Christmas
luncheon and caroling at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 2 at St. Paul's.  Region 6
clergy are especially invited to attend and to present a parishioner to
be honored. Each Region 6 parish will receive an event flyer and an

PREMIERE OF CHORAL ANTHEM AT ST. MARK'S

The premiere of a new choral anthem, "As Newborn Stars Were Stirred To
Song," is set for 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at St. Mark's, Capitol Hill. Keith
Scott Reas, St. Mark's former director of music (May 1991-July 2009)
will return to hear this anthem commissioned in his honor. Composer
David Hurd will direct the church choirs in the singing of this work.
The choirs also will present a "composite mass." A gala reception will

MUSIC FESTIVAL SUNDAY

St. John's, Georgetown (3240 O Street, NW) will present a Music Festival
Sunday - a festival of readings, hymns and anthems with St. John's Choir
and Samuel Carabetta, organist and choirmaster - at 11 a.m. Nov. 15. The
service features beloved hymns and anthems, along with a selection of
poetry and writings by authors, Christina Rossetti, John Milton, T. S.
Eliot, Edna St. Vincent Millay, George Herbert and Madeleine L'Engle.

RACIAL RECONCILIATION WORKSHOP

Register now for a Nov. 13-14 Racial Reconciliation Workshop at St.
Nicholas', Darnestown (15575 Germantown Road, Germantown). The workshop
will address the fears, ignorance and guilt which inhibit relationships
between races. Participants will take part in a number of "do talk"
exercises to facilitate discussion about race. This workshop fulfills
the national church's requirement for anti-racism training by all church
leaders, a requirement that Bishop John B. Chane has also called on

* The Rev. Jered Paul Weber-Johnson, assistant rector at St. Alban's,
D.C., will be ordained to the priesthood by the Rt. Rev. Greg Rickel,
Bishop of Olympia during a 7 p.m. Nov. 3 service at St. Alban's. Clergy
are invited to process and vest (red stoles).

* The Rev. Debra Brewin-Wilson will be installed as rector of St.
Thomas', Croom (Upper Marlboro) during a 10 a.m. Nov. 14 service at the
church. Clergy are invited to process and vest (white stoles). All are
asked to bring a can of soup or stew for the local food bank.

* Ascension, Lexington Park announces the retirement of the Rev. Rona
Harding after 33 years in ordained ministry and 21 years as Ascension's
rector. The celebration of ministry is set for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 8. A
reception will follow. All are invited to attend.

 

JACQUES JOHNSON AND FRIENDS, WITH MARGIE CLARK ON VOCALS

Jazz ensemble Jacques Johnson and friends, featuring Margie Clark on

GOD'S CALL TO LEADERSHIP: SATURDAY SCHOOL AT VTS  

The Saturday School for Leadership at Virginia Theological Seminary
offers opportunities for learning and peer support for leaders in
congregations. Classes run from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the seminary's
Center for the Ministry of Teaching. Upcoming classes include
"Identifying Spiritual Gifts for Leadership" on Nov. 7 and "Leadership
and Corporate Discernment" on Nov. 14. Instructor is Kathleen Staudt,

DISCIPLES OF CHRIST IN COMMUNITY 

The spring 2010 session of Disciples of Christ in Community at
Washington National Cathedral starts Jan. 23 and runs for 14 weeks. Each
session is two hours long, 7-9 p.m. One Saturday session will be held on
Feb. 7, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost is $100. Register at

ADVENT SILENT RETREAT

The Diocesan Retreat Committee will hold an Advent Silent Retreat on
Dec. 4- 6 at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, Marriottsville. Retreat
director will be the Very Rev. Ian Markham, dean of the Virginia
Theological Seminary. The theme will be "Faith, Forgiveness and Peace:
Bringing Human Complexity to God." The retreat will include prayer,
private reflection and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. There will
be opportunities for consultation or confession with Markham. The fee is

BETHLEHEM SERVICE

The third annual Joint Simulcast Worship Service with the People of
Bethlehem is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 19 in Washington National Cathedral's
Bethlehem Chapel. In Washington, the service will be led by Bishop John
Bryson Chane and Bishop Richard Graham of the Metropolitan Washington,
D.C. Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Dean Samuel T.
Lloyd and the Rev. Canon Steve Huber, the cathedral's vicar. In
Bethlehem Dr. Mitri Raheb, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas
Church in Bethlehem, Bishop Munib Younan of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Jordan and the Holy Land and Bishop Suheil Dawani of the
Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem will preside. The service is sponsored by
the Ad Hoc Committee for Bethlehem, Sharing Jerusalem and Washington
Interfaith Alliance for Middle East Peace. 

 

BISHOP WALKER SCHOOL AT ST. MARY'S, FOGGY BOTTOM

St. Mary's, Foggy Bottom will host pupils, faculty, staff and the Board
of Trustees of the Bishop John T. Walker School at a special worship
service set for 10 a.m. Dec. 6. Homilist will be the Rev. Canon Kwasi

HONDURAS TRIP 

The diocesan mission trip to Honduras is set for Jan. 10-20, 2010. The
itinerary is: Jan 10-15 in Copan in intensive Spanish study, with home
stays with local families; Jan. 16-20 in rural villages with Episcopal

NEW GRANT AVAILABLE TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN IN NEED

The Pitts Emergency Grant, created by the Saint Anna's Home of the
Diocese of Washington, is a one-time award of up to $1,500 designed to
offer emergency assistance to women of at least 70 years old of African
descent who are members of the Diocese of Washington when there is a
critical, unexpected event which requires an immediate response. For
