DIOCESAN MEETING ON DIOCESE OF JERUSALEM RELATIONSHIP

Bishop John Bryson Chane will host an open meeting to discuss the fall pilgrimage to Jerusalem and how a companion relationship with the Diocese of Jerusalem might function best from 6 to 8 p.m. May 28 in Trenbath Hall at St. Alban's, D.C. All are welcome.

 

RELEASE A BUTTERFLY ON MEMORIAL DAY

The Wendt Center invites individuals and families who have lost a loved one to release a monarch butterfly their name from 2 to 4 p.m. May 30 in Garfield Park, located at 3rd and G Streets, SE. The center, founded by the late Rev. Bill Wendt, former rector of St. Stephen and the Incarnation, is a D.C. nonprofit that helps families and children deal with loss, grief and trauma. To participate in the Memorial Day event, go to WendtCenter.org and click on "Let a Butterfly Soar." If you cannot attend, one of the center's staff or volunteer will release your butterfly.

 

2009 DIOCESAN JOURNAL AND DIRECTORY 

Clergy with recent or upcoming changes in address or employment should contact Ann Talty at atalty at edow.org or 202/537-6548 by June 1 to have those changes included in the 2009 Journal. Also, parishes that have not yet reported vestry elections or delegate changes this year need to submit them for inclusion in the Journal. SPRING CATHEDRAL CONFIRMATIONS

The next diocesan confirmation service is set for 10 a.m. June 20 at Washington National Cathedral. Parish clergy are asked to register the number of persons they are bringing for confirmation, reception and reaffirmation by June 1. Please respond to cathedralconfirmations at edow.org

 

ORDINATION SERVICE 

At 10 a.m. June 13, Bishop John B. Chane will ordain Sarah Helene Duggin, Greta Getlein, Shell Teyssier Kimble, Timothy Joseph Malone, Elizabeth P. O'Callaghan and Christopher I. Wilkins to the Sacred Order of Deacons at Washington National Cathedral. All are welcome. Clergy: Please vest in red stoles. A reception will follow the service.

 

ALBAN INSTITUTE WEBINARS

In June, the Alban Institute and the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving will offer a series of one-hour live "webinars" that will focus on congregations and the economic crisis. Topics are: June 2, "Talking About Money, Like it or Not;" June 4, "Stewardship In Lean Times;" June 11, "Staff Anxieties In A Changing Economy;" June 17, "Moving From Financial Survival To Missional Focus;" June 25, "Being Ready For A Rebound." Each event begins at 3 p.m. and costs $49.95. VISUAL ARTS CHAPTER TO MEET JUNE 16

IMPROVE LITERACY AMONG STUDENTS IN JAMAICA

St. James, Potomac will celebrate its 2009 Millennium Development Goals beneficiary, the Jamaican Education Project, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. May 30 in its Parish Hall with Jamaican food and music by the Pan Masters Steel Orchestra. A documentary about the work being done by parishioners Karl and Angela Bennett to benefit children in Kingston also will be shown. Donations will be accepted. The church is located at 11815 Seven Locks Road, exit 4B off I-270.

 

'THE CALL OF GOD,' A DAY OF QUIET REFLECTION

"The Call of God," A Day of Quiet Reflection in honor of Evelyn Underhill is set for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 6 at Sayre House on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral. This annual event offers two meditations drawn from Underhill's work, as well as opportunities for private prayer, corporate silence and Eucharist. Leaders are Lynne Shaner and Kathleen Staudt. EPISCOPAL PEACE FELLOWSHIP: FILM AND DISCUSSION

The Episcopal Peace Fellowship will show a series of movies followed by discussion during the summer months. FESTIVAL EUCHARIST - FRENCH ROMANTICS ON LAFAYETTE SQUARE

St. John's, Lafayette Square will begin its summer service schedule at 10:30 a.m. June 14 with a Festival Eucharist to celebrate the new Lively-Fulcher Organ. The combined St. John's and Parish Choirs, under the direction of Benjamin Hutto, will be accompanied by Michael Lodico, associate organist and choir director. HOSTING 11TH STEP RETREATS 

Samaritan Ministry is launching a new retreat program for Next Step program participants in recovery from substance abuse. Called 11th Step Retreats, the day-long retreat is designed for people who are working the 11th step in a 12-step recovery program of any kind. It is designed to help people find a method of prayer and/or meditation that enables them to draw closer to the God of their understanding. Christian Communities Group Homes, a service of Episcopal Senior Ministries, is seeking a part time Group Homes Manager for its residences for older adults located in NE Washington. The manager will provide oversight for day-to-day resident life and supervise caregiver staff.  Experience working with older adults is preferred.
