COMMITTEE ON YOUTH APPLICATIONS

Applications for the 2009-2010 Committee on Youth are available at edow.org. There are openings in Regions 1, 4, 5 and 6 as well as at-large positions, open to young people from any region in the diocese. The committee is looking for people who are interested in making a difference in the lives of their peers by developing opportunities for a closer relationship with Christ and life-transforming experiences. Those who will be in grades 8-12 in the 2009-2010 school year are invited to apply. Applicants must have two recommendations, one from within the parish and one outside the parish. UMD CHRISTIAN STUDIES PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

Episcopal Campus Ministry, University of Maryland: The Christian Studies Living-Learning Program at UMD is receiving applications for housing for the 2009-2010 academic year. Students from all majors (graduate and undergraduate) may apply. The program is housed in the Episcopal Student Center, administered by the UMD Episcopal/Anglican Campus Ministry. Residents will have a private bedroom, access to the kitchen and utilities included in the rent. Please contact pantoci at umd.edu for an application.

 

SENIOR SUNDAY

May 3 has been designated as Senior Sunday by Bishop John Bryson Chane to encourage each congregation to recognize and pray for Episcopal senior ministries in the diocese, to learn about these resources, and to celebrate the role older adults play in our congregations. SENIOR CELEBRATION 2009

A Senior Celebration that includes a worship service at the Washington National Cathedral's Bethlehem Chapel is set for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. May 7. The celebrant will be Bishop John Bryson Chane; guest speaker is Dr. Gene Cohen. Each congregation in the diocese may designate one older adult who has provided leadership within the church or the community for special recognition. The honoree will receive a certificate from the Bishop and a description of the honorees service along with his/her photo and a link to the parish Web site will be posted on the ESM Web site. SENIOR CELEBRATION FOR REGION 6 PARISHES

A Senior Celebration for Region 6 parishes is set for 11:30 a.m. May 5 at St. Paul's, Piney Parish in Waldorf. A luncheon prepared by the women of St. Paul's will follow the service. Call 301/645-5000 for more information and to RSVP (required).

 

THE GEORGETOWN HOUSE TOUR

The annual Georgetown House Tour to benefit the ministries of St. John's, Georgetown is set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 25. This year's tour will feature 11 of Georgetown's most beautiful homes and gardens as well as the DC Designer Showcase home. The tour includes afternoon tea in the Parish Hall (3240 O Street, N.W), featuring homemade tea sandwiches and sweets. Tea will be served from 2 to 5 p.m. and is included in the ticket price. Advance tickets are $40/person (purchase by April 19); day of the tour is $45. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more at $35/person. THE POWER OF NONVIOLENCE

The Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Episcopal Peace Fellowship DC present, "The Power of Nonviolence; Tools for Personal and Social Change," on May 8 at St. Alban's, D.C. (Saterlee Hall). CHILD CARE WORKERS - ST. ANDREW'S, COLLEGE PARK

St. Andrew's, College Park is looking for child care workers for its Sunday morning nursery.  Under the supervision of the Director of Christian Formation, the child care workers will provide care to infants and toddlers on Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. Duties include opening and setting up the nursery, providing supervised care and/or play, serving parent-provided snacks, and cleaning up and closing the nursery at noon. SPRING CATHEDRAL CONFIRMATIONS

Confirmations are set for 10 a.m. May 16 and June 20 at Washington National Cathedral. Parish clergy are requested to register the number of persons they are bringing for confirmation, reception and reaffirmation on May 16 by April 17 by e-mailing cathedralconfirmations at edow.org. The May 16 service is near capacity, so please respond as soon as possible. You can also register at this time for the June 20 confirmation.  

 

SPRING CLERGY CONFERENCE

Registration is now open for the Spring Clergy Conference, set for May 12-14 at Shrine Mont. Keynote speaker will be Phyllis Tickle, an authority on religion in America and author of more than two dozen books on religion and spirituality. STEWARDSHIP CONFERENCE 2009

Washington National Cathedral was built with the creativity, energy, skill and generosity of generations of artisans, donors and workers. Learn how it was built on Thursdays, 2:30 p.m., March through June in the Perry Auditorium, 7th floor of the Cathedral. The 30 minute presentation is free, and no reservations are necessary. 

 

BOOK FAIR TO BENEFIT THE BISHOP WALKER SCHOOL 

A book fair to benefit the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys is set for 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 9 at the Politics & Prose Bookstore, 5015 Connecticut Avenue, NW. VOCATIONAL MINISTRY RETREAT

"Discerning God's Call In Your Life," the next vocational ministry retreat, is set for April 24-25 at Priestfield Pastoral Center in Kearneysville, WV. The retreat will be led by Marjory Bankson, author of "The Call to the Soul" and recent workshop leader at the Diocesan Convention.
