SPRING CATHEDRAL CONFIRMATIONS

Confirmations are set for 10 a.m. May 16 and June 20 at Washington National Cathedral. Parish clergy are requested to register the number of persons they are bringing for confirmation, reception and reaffirmation on May 16 by April 17 by e-mailing cathedralconfirmations at edow.org. The May 16 service is near capacity, so please respond as soon as possible. You can also register at this time for the June 20 confirmation.  

 

SPRING CLERGY CONFERENCE

Registration is now open for the Spring Clergy Conference, set for May 12-14 at Shrine Mont. Keynote speaker will be Phyllis Tickle, an authority on religion in America and author of more than two dozen books on religion and spirituality. Tickle is currently a senior fellow of the Cathedral College and is a founding member of The Canterbury Roundtable. Register at  www.edow.org/events  "Clergy Conference." SUMMER CAMPS AT THE BISHOP CLAGGETT CENTER

The Bishop Claggett Center in the Diocese of Maryland provides faith-based summer camps near Frederick for youth completing grades 2-12. Fun activities including kayaking, canoeing, swimming in the new pool, hiking, games, skits, art workshops and campfires take place in an accepting, safe, Christian community environment. CHRISTIAN PEACE WITNESS FOR IRAQ 

Christian Peace Witness for Iraq will hold a series of events in Washington, D.C. on April 29-30. These include a speech by Diana Butler Bass at 12:30 p.m. April 30 at National City Christian Church, 5 Thomas Circle NW; a worship service there at 7 p.m. and a candlelight procession to bring the Bread of Life to the White House, featuring an address by the Rev. RETREATS AT DAYSPRING

The Dayspring Silent Retreat Center is offering the following weekend retreats:

* May 1-3: "The Original Vision," with Merrill Ware Carrington. A window on our early, and sometimes fleeting, experiences of what scripture describes as the Kingdom of Heaven.

POSTAGE STAMP DONATIONS

Please consider collecting used stamps for patients at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital. The stamps allow 72 psychiatric patients the opportunity to develop job skills through sorting, filing, appraising and sales. The patients work two hours a day in the Stamps For A Living business, and they are paid minimum wage. For many, this is the first employment they have had. The business has been featured in the Washington Post twice, on NPR radio and in Linn's Stamp news. Please cut stamps off envelopes leaving a ¼ inch border and mail to the United Church Stamps for a Living Business, 1920 G Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20006. CLERGY UPDATES

* Robert Black, a candidate for ordination from the Diocese of North Carolina has been appointed as the new assistant rector at St. John's, Lafayette Square. Black has served as the seminarian at St. John's for the last two years. He will begin his new ministry this summer.

* Carol Jablonski is the new rector of St. Andrew's, College Park. Jablonski is presently the associate rector at St. Stephen's, Durham. She begins her new ministry in early June.

* Melana Nelson-Amaker is the new part-time assistant at Trinity, D.C. Nelson-Amaker is presently on the archives staff at Virginia Theological Seminary. She will continue as part of the archives staff at VTS when she begins her new ministry this summer at Trinity. 

* Jered P. Weber-Johnson is the new assistant rector at St. Alban's, D.C. Weber-Johnson is from the Diocese of Olympia and has been an intern at Trinity, Wall Street.

STEWARDSHIP CONFERENCE 2009 

Nathan Dungan, author, speaker, national expert on family finances and founder of Save Share Spend LLC, will be the keynote speaker at the 2009 Stewardship Conference, set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 9 at Washington National Cathedral. 11TH ANNUAL SHOWCASE OF EPISCOPAL SCHOOLS

The 11th Annual Showcase of Episcopal Schools is set for 4 p.m. April 19 at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church and Day School (doors open at 3 p.m.). DOCC AND TLB TRAINING AT WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL 

* Disciples of Christ in Community facilitator and presenter training is set for June 19-21 at Washington National Cathedral. Cost is $190 per person with most meals included. To take part, you must be recommended by your rector or priest-in-charge. Those who will be offering DOCC in prisons will participate in the regular program but will have special times together.

 

* The Cathedral Transforming Literature of the Bible training workshop is set for June 19-20. There is a fee of $100 for licensing and two commentaries. HOW IN THE WORLD DID THEY BUILD THE CATHEDRAL?

Washington National Cathedral was built with the creativity, energy, skill and generosity of generations of artisans, donors and workers. Learn how it was built on Thursdays, 2:30 p.m., March through June in the Perry Auditorium, 7th floor of the Cathedral. The 30 minute presentation is free, and no reservations are necessary. 

 

THE LIFE AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Explore Abraham Lincoln's knowledge of the Bible as skeptic and believer using art in Washington National Cathedral. The docent-led tour is titled "Abraham Lincoln: Whose Lonely Soul God Kindled," and is set for 2:30 p.m. April 15. Free. No reservations required. BOOK FAIR TO BENEFIT THE BISHOP WALKER SCHOOL 

A book fair to benefit the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys is set for 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 9 at the Politics & Prose Bookstore, 5015 Connecticut Avenue, NW. The school will receive 20 percent of all purchases that day, and there also will be a "wish list" of books that can be purchased as a donation to the school library. VOCATIONAL MINISTRY RETREAT

"Discerning God's Call In Your Life," the next vocational ministry retreat, is set for April 24-25 at Priestfield Pastoral Center in Kearneysville, WV. The retreat will be led by Marjory Bankson, author of "The Call to the Soul" and recent workshop leader at the Diocesan Convention.
