2009 COLA INCREASE APPROVED
The Diocesan Council approved a 3.9 percent cost of living increase for
2009 at its September meeting. Updated compensation tables will be
available at www.edow.org within the next week.

20S & 30S (YOUNG ADULTS) VISIONING DAY
Young adults in their 20s and 30s are invited to take part in, "Prayer,
Reflection and Vision for our Church," a gathering to help envision the
diocesan ministry for Young Adults. The event, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sept. 27 at All Souls', D.C. (2300 Cathedral Ave., NW), will be led by

LATINO MINISTRIES CELEBRATION
A celebration of thanksgiving for all the Latino Ministries of the
Diocese of Washington is set for 6 to 11 p.m. Oct. 4 (Saturday) at Our
Saviour, Hillandale, (1700 Powder Mill Road, Silver Spring, Md. 20903).

CLERGY: APPLY NOW FOR THE SUMMER COLLEGIUM
Applications are now being accepted for the Summer Collegium, a Lilly
Endowment project in support of small congregations. Twenty-five clergy
and spouses/partners from all Christian denominations will be invited to
Virginia Theological Seminary for "Body, Mind and Soul: Celebrating,
Strengthening and Sustaining Clergy Wholeness in Small Congregations"
from June 24 to July 1. Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 15. All
expenses for the event are paid for by the grant. For more information

THE CHANE GANG LIVE! WALKER SCHOOL BENEFIT
Bishop John Bryson Chane and his band, The Chane Gang, will bring their
hard-driving blues sound to Washington Episcopal School (5600 Little
Falls Parkway, Bethesda) from 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10. The concert, proceeds
from which will benefit the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys, costs
$30 per person, with light fare and a cash bar. Wear your dancing shoes

PASTORAL RESPONSE TO RAPE & DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WORKSHOP
"Pastoral Response to Rape and Domestic Violence," a workshop focusing
on what clergy and faith communities can do to raise awareness of and
support to survivors of sexual and domestic abuse is set for 10 a.m. to
1 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Perry Auditorium on the 7th floor of Washington

ST. PAUL'S CHOIR OF MEN AND BOYS - OPEN HOUSE
St. Paul's, K Street will hold a Sept. 21 Open House for parents and
their sons who may be interested in the Choir of Men and Boys. This
highly-regarded choir sings Choral Evensong each Sunday from September
to early June. The opportunities and musical education offered are on
par with that of English Cathedral choirs, on which the St. Paul's choir
is modeled. Children and families of any or no religious affiliation are
warmly welcomed. The Open House begins with rehearsal at 4:45 p.m.,
which all are welcome to observe, followed by Evensong at 6 p.m. A
reception and opportunity to meet the musicians and choir parents

GARRISON KEILLOR AT WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL
Spend an evening with popular author and satirist Garrison Keillor from

a fresh taste of his thinking and what to expect in the new Lake Wobegon

An Evening of Spirituals, featuring guest soloist Zorita Thomas and the

will give a presentation on the history of spirituals. Following the

DISCERNING MISSION IN COMMUNITY   
The Rev. Sam Portaro will present the Fall 2008 endowed lecture,
"Discerning Mission in Community," cosponsored by the Episcopal/Anglican
Campus Ministry, UMD and St. Andrew's College Park, at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2
at St. Andrew's, College Park. The Rev. Portaro, a noted Anglican
author, was Episcopal Chaplain at the University of Chicago for 25
years, and is former president of the Episcopal Society of Ministries of

ASSOCIATION OF ANGLICAN MUSICIANS REGION III CONFERENCE
The Region III Conference of the Association of Anglican Musicians is
set for Oct. 12-13 at  St. Paul's Parish, K Street. Sunday's schedule

the choristers at Westminster Abbey, Solemn Evensong and Benediction
with the choirs of St. Paul's Parish, and a catered dinner with keynote

NEW STEWARDSHIP WORKSHOPS 
* Money Management 101: Set for 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 16 at Episcopal Church
House. Led by Gian Deguzman of Primerica Financial. Deguzman will help
participants understand the basics and learn more about best practices
when managing their own money. Topics include setting goals, future
planning, insurance and a basic overview of different kinds of
investments.  
* Values and Money: Set for 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 25 at Episcopal Church
House. Led by Patricia Bjorling, director of stewardship for the Diocese
of Virginia. This workshop is for people who want to explore the
relationship between their spiritual lives and their possessions. Church
leaders who need a deeper sense of a congregation's needs and wants also
are encouraged to attend.

TOWN HALL MEETING FOR MONTGOMERY COUNTY
The Episcopal Peace Fellowship DC is co-sponsoring a Town Hall Meeting
for Montgomery County from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 22 on the Germantown Campus
of Montgomery College, Globe Hall, 20200 Observation Drive. County
Executive Isiah Leggett will moderate a panel discussion on these
questions: What is the war costing Montgomery County? What can local

Canon Jim Naughton will share his experiences at the Lambeth Conference

THE BISHOP'S 2008 CHILDREN TO CHILDREN ADVENT 
Bishop Chane will ask parish Sunday Schools this Advent to raise funds
for bed nets to protect children in Mozambique from the deadly disease
of malaria spread by mosquitoes.  Information will be sent out next
month to parish Sunday School coordinators from the Southern Africa
Partnership Committee with a suggested Activity Guide that might be used
in your Sunday School classes. Contact person for SAPC is Cheryl Daves

DAYS OF REPENTENCE
The Episcopal Church will publicly apologize for its involvement in the
institution of Transatlantic Slavery and conduct an historic and
contemporary exploration of 
slavery and its effects on the church and society Oct. 3-4 at St.
Thomas, Lancaster Avenue and Overbrook Street, Philadelphia. The program
begins at 1 p.m. Oct 3, and culminates with a Service of Repentance at
10:30 a.m. Oct. 4. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will

WALKER CENTER DEDICATION POSTPONED
The Sept. 28 dedication of the new Bishop Walker Center at Holy
Comforter, D.C. has been postponed until further notice due to
construction delays.

ST. PHILIP'S DAY AT POLITICS AND PROSE BOOKSTORE      
On Oct. 5, 20 percent of purchases at Politics and Prose, 5051
Connecticut Avenue, NW, will benefit the St. Philip's Child Development
Center of Anacostia. The Child Development Center, a member of the
Association of Episcopal Schools, is the only provider of quality early
childhood education in Anacostia. Ninety-five percent of the children
attending the Center qualify for tuition subsidization. 

ADVENT SILENT RETREAT
The Diocesan Retreat Committee will hold an Advent Silent Retreat at the
Cathedral College on Dec. 5-7.  The theme of the retreat will be "The
Lord said to Moses "Why do you cry out to me? Tell the people to get
moving!" The Rev. John Carleton Hayden, will lead the retreat. Drawing
upon the biblical account of Moses, Hayden will speak about a
discipleship that weaves together identity, conversion, freedom and
vocation. The fee is $195. Scholarships are available. To reserve a
space, applications and a deposit of $100 must be received by Nov. 7.

ACCESSIBLITY GRANTS  
The Comis Foundation solicits proposals for projects to increase
accessibility within churches in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington.
The Foundation will award matching grants of up to 50 percent of project
costs and up to a maximum of $30,000 per award.  The deadline for
submission of proposals is Nov. 1. Instructions for preparation and

BISHOP WALKER SCHOOL FOR BOYS EVENSONG AND INSTALLATION
The Right Reverend John Bryson Chane and the governing board of The
Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys cordially invite you to choral
evensong with the installation of the school's faculty, staff, and
governing board. The Choral Evensong and installation will take place,
Wednesday September 24 at 5:30pm at The National Cathedral. A reception

A DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING FOR THE MDGS
The Provinces of the Anglican Communion have called for a day of prayer,
fasting and witness on Sept. 25, when there is a special session of the
United Nations to discuss the Millennium Development Goals. Visit

intention for the extreme poor throughout the world on that day; skip at
least one meal in solidarity with the nearly 1 billion people who go to

SUPPORTING THE AIDS WALK
On Oct. 4, members of the diocese will join Grand Marshall Greg Louganis
and thousands of others for the 22nd annual AIDS Walk Washington. The
event is a 5K fundraising walk/run, benefiting Whitman-Walker Clinic.
